Tax Season Checklist: 7 Things You Need Before You File

Tax season can feel overwhelming — especially if you’re self-employed, bilingual, or filing for the first time. But with a little preparation (and the right guidance), you can feel confident and in control.

Here’s a simple, judgment-free checklist to help you get started — whether you’re filing solo, with a partner, or running your own business.


1. Personal Information

Make sure you have the basics ready:

  • Social Security Number (or ITIN)
  • Your spouse’s and dependents’ info
  • Bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit

Tip: If you don’t have a Social Security Number, ask us about ITIN filing support.


2. Income Documents

Bring all documents that show money you earned:

  • W-2s (for employees)
  • 1099s (for freelancers, contractors, etc.)
  • Cash income or side hustle logs
  • Any unemployment income or stimulus letters

3. Deductions & Credits

You might qualify for benefits like:

  • Child Tax Credit
  • Education credits
  • Business expense deductions (see #5)
  • Retirement contributions

4. Health Insurance Info

If you had coverage through the Marketplace, bring Form 1095-A. It affects your refund or balance due.


5. Business or Side Hustle Records

  • Track mileage, apps/tools, and work-from-home costs
